FREE Live Training

In this FREE online training session, experienced university teachers Dr Mike Exarchos and Dr Rob Toulson will help you understand the process of recording music and guide you on a path towards being able to easily make your own demo recordings and backing tracks. Using just a mobile phone and the free Songzap production software, the course tutors will challenge you to think critically about music recording and help you get set up to self-record and capture your songs and compositions to a high level.

The Songzap course covers six detailed lessons. In this live online seminar, we will introduce the course and deliver lesson 1, with the intention of equipping you to complete lessons 2-6 in your own time afterwards. During the 60-minute training session, we will therefore cover the following:

  • Meet the tutors and introduction to the course
  • Fundamentals and philosophy of music recording
  • Analysing music recordings and setting goals
  • Capturing sounds and reflecting on results
  • Collaboration in music production
  • Self-learning and continuous personal development
  • Exploring the Songzap learning resources
  • Audience questions and answers

Using Songzap, we will help you to understand the essentials of recording, so that you can capture your own ideas, produce demo songs, create backing tracks to jam to, export your music to share with collaborators, and prepare you for working with a music producer or attending a professional music studio session.

The course tutors are both successful musicians and music producers who each also have over 20 years of university teaching experience. Dr Rob was previously course leader for the Commercial Music bachelor’s degree at University of Westminster in London (UK), and Dr Mike was previously course leader of Recording, Mixing and Mastering (bachelor’s degree) at the London College of Music within University of West London. Mike also has an MTV Award for his music projects and was previously signed to EMI records on a multi-album recording contract.

As experienced university teachers, we’ve created a six-part course to help introduce simple multitrack recording and demo production experiences to musicians. See full details about the Songzap Course here.

To take the course, you need very little musical knowledge or technical ability. An interest in creating, performing or recording music is required, though you may find that even if you have no interest in music tech, you’ll soon become invigorated by the power of making music with technology such as Songzap.
